Become a Host: Welcome a Student into Your Home

Open your door to a young person from abroad and enjoy daily companionship, cultural exchange, and practical help — all while sharing the comfort of your own home.

Why Become a Host?

Hosting an international student through AuCare is more than renting out a spare room — it's an opportunity to form a meaningful connection with a young person who genuinely wants to spend time with you. Many of our hosts tell us that their student becomes like a grandchild, bringing energy, laughter, and warmth back into their daily routine.

Unlike traditional lodging arrangements, AuCare is built around cultural exchange. Your student isn't just a tenant — they're a companion who shares meals, conversations, and everyday moments with you. cultural exchange.

What Hosts Provide

As a host, you provide a comfortable home environment where a student can feel welcome and safe. This is the foundation of every successful AuCare match, and it doesn't require anything extraordinary — just genuine hospitality and a spare room.

A Private Room

A clean, furnished private bedroom with a bed, desk or work surface, storage space, and access to bathroom facilities. The room should have a door that locks for privacy.

Meals

Hosts provide meals or access to kitchen facilities so the student can prepare their own food. Many hosts and students enjoy cooking together — it's a wonderful way to share culture through food.

A Welcoming Environment

Students are far from home and often adjusting to a new country. A warm, welcoming atmosphere helps them settle in and makes the arrangement enjoyable for everyone.

You don't need a large home or a perfect setup. What matters most is your willingness to share your space and your time with a respectful young person.

What Students Provide in Return

In exchange for free or affordable housing, students commit to providing approximately 2 hours of daily companionship and light assistance. This is not a job — it's a mutual exchange rooted in respect and shared living.

Typical activities students help with include:

Companionship — conversation, board games, walks, shared meals
Light Housekeeping — tidying up, dishes, laundry assistance
Technology Help — phone, computer, smart TV, video calls
Errands — grocery shopping, pharmacy, post office
Cooking Together — meal preparation, trying new recipes
Accompaniment — appointments, social outings, walks

It's important to note that students are not professional caregivers. They cannot provide medical care, heavy lifting, or personal hygiene assistance.

Who Can Be a Host?

AuCare hosts come from all walks of life. Whether you're a retired professional, a widow or widower looking for company, or simply someone with a spare room and a generous spirit, you could be a perfect fit.

  • A spare private room — furnished and comfortable, with access to shared bathroom and kitchen facilities.
  • Generally stable health — you should be able to live independently and not require medical or personal care assistance from the student.
  • Willingness to engage in cultural exchange — be open to learning about another culture, sharing your own traditions, and building a genuine relationship.
  • Patience and openness — your student may be adjusting to a new language and culture. Flexibility and understanding make all the difference.
